You are now just about ready for your first session!  Don’t be nervous!  Our tutors are the least intimidating, and most understanding bunch!

Nearly all of us are language learners ourselves so we have been through the same experience.

Although all of our students are different and so too are all of their language goals, their first sessions are remarkably similar. Tutors usually use the first thirty minutes with a new student to get to know who you are and why you’re learning English.

Task 1 (Vocabulary)

Make your own word web. Never heard of a word web? The picture below should clarify things!

You can start with "About me", "Why I am learning English", "My hometown", "My hobbies", "My family", "My job", as these are some of the topics tutors will normally bring up in a first session.

If you have something specific you’d like to discuss during your first session you can add it to the word web too. Attach related words and concepts with lines and feel free to scribble all over the place.

The word web only has to make sense to you! After you finish your word web, talk aloud about your main topics. Don’t memorize passages verbatim, just practice saying some of these things to yourself: be calm, be cool, and be collected.

Task 2 (English in Use)

Remember - “When you're a latecomer to a language, what happens is you live there with a continuous and perpetual frustration. As latecomers, we always want to say more, you know, crack better jokes, say better things, but we end up saying less because there's a gap between the mind and the tongue. And that gap is very intimidating. But if we manage not to be frightened by it, it's also stimulating.”
